DAY ONE

 

Ladyfingers Letterpress – The Basics of Hand Lettering

Duration of Class: One Day (6 Hours)

Medium: Drawing and Typography

Skill Level: All

 

Description: With origins in calligraphy and traditional type design, hand-lettering is gaining popularity among designers and illustrators alike. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of hand-lettering as you learn to draw Serif, Sans Serif, and Script alphabets. We will explore basic typographic elements such as tracking, kerning and spacing while covering the basic structure of letterforms and typography. This is a beginner to intermediate level class. Students should feel comfortable drawing and excited to learn how to create expressive hand-drawn letters.

DAY TWO

 

Ladyfingers Letterpress – Using Hand-Lettering To Create Dynamic Layouts

Duration of Class: One Day (6 Hours)

Medium: Drawing and Typography

Skill Level: All

 

Description: Using the skills that you will learn during Day 1 of the workshop series (“The Basics of Hand-Lettering”), students will create dynamic hand-lettered layouts that may include (but are not limited to) favorite song lyrics, inspirational quotes, favorite phrases and sayings, etc. This class will cover layout, composition, concepting, sketching and refining your designs as we explore the different ways that hand-lettered styles interact with each other to create a unique and illustrative drawing.  Students are encouraged to utilize some of the hand-lettered styles that you will develop during “The Basics of Hand-Lettering” workshop.

DAY THREE

 

Ladyfingers Letterpress – Digitizing Your Lettering: From Sketch to Vector

Duration of Class: One Day (6 Hours)

Medium: Drawing and Digital Design

Skill Level: All

 

Description: One of the key elements to successful hand-lettering is being able to digitize your drawings and adapt them to a digital world. This class will cover the basics of image preparation, scanning and digitization using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. You will start with a drawing (or series of drawings) and by the end you will have a finished high resolution vectorized design, ready for print and web. Students will be required to bring their own laptops with Adobe CS5 (and up) software and have a basic understanding of digital tools.

Scanning and vectorization of a hand-lettered illustration
