We won Card of the Year!

September 14, 2015

When we showed up to the 2015 Louie Awards, hosted by the Greeting Card Association and held at the Edison Ballroom in New York City, we were psyched to have been nominated in 6 different categories. We had won Louie Awards in the past, including the esteemed Print and Production Excellence Award for two years in a row, but we had no idea that when we would be leaving that night we would be holding the Golden Louie - the award for Card of the Year!

Out of the thousands of greeting cards entered to win a Louie Award this year, our "Bun in the Freezer" card not only won in the newly appointed LGBTQ category, but it also took home the honor of being awarded Card of the Year. We took home a total of 6 Louie Awards that night, also winning in the categories of:

Print and Production Excellence
for our commissioned Italian Pop-Out Boat Wedding Thank You Card

Congratulations/Special Occasions
for our deluxe Baby Bump Card

LGBTQ
for our Bun in the Freezer Card

Religious Celebrations
for our Sweet Light Hanukkah Card

and General Letterpress

for our generally awesome assortment of letterpress offerings.

Not only were we totally psyched that we won Card of the Year, but we were especially surprised by the type of card that had won. The LGBTQ category was new this year, and the date of the Louie Awards was still a few months away from the historic SCOTUS equal marriage decision. No doubt about it - there has been tremendous progress for the rights and equality for the LGBTQ community, but it still feels like a niche market when compared to the other types of cards that are so popularly available (think birthday, holiday, thank you… etc.).

When we created the card, we didn't even think people would get it, let alone buy it. To be honest, we merely made it as an inside joke, between the two of us as we were embarking on our own journey to start a family using alternative methods. Who knew that there were so many other people out there who were going through a similar thing? We were blown away by the response - not just from within the industry, but by people reaching out to us to tell us their own personal stories with how they managed to start a family despite having a few bumps in the road.

Out of many of the accomplishments we've achieved as business owners over the years, I have to say this is among one of our proudest moments. Not only has it connected us with so many awesome people, but it has inspired us to create more work from personal experience!
